Talking Sharks with Dr. Sal Jorgensen | Shark Week 2019 Special Episode:

Yep, we’re plugging our Soundcloud! 😅

For this Shark Week, we sat down with our very own senior research scientist Dr. Sal Jorgensen to chat about the current state of his white shark research, the process of coming with new technologies to study these elusive animals, and what it’s like to be the shark scientist he’s wanted to be since he was a kid. We hope you enjoy the chat!

A Fitbit For White Sharks: The Blubber Burrito!

Eat your heart out, white sharks fans: White shark feeding behavior may be wrapped in mystery—but the science to solve it is wrapped in blubber! After being ingested, special tags we’re calling “Fitbits for Sharks” record the shark’s swimming and feeding behaviors from within the belly of the beast.

After a few days to about a month, the tag is regurgitated with other indigestible bits, at which point our researchers swoop in to recover the tag to study its contents. These data will help shark scientists understand more about the day in the life of these mega-fish as they swim along the Californian coast and the Farallon Islands out to Hawaii via the White Shark Cafe.

Check out what we’ve learned!

Important note: The blubber used in this research is collected with scientific permits from previously deceased animals. No animals were harmed in these studies.

The thread above feature ASCII bunnies—one holding a shark, the other a camera—engaging in meta-commentary about how sharks’ inherent appeal as top predators can lead to their vilification without thoughtful treatment.

The thread’s thesis: Shark Awws >> Shark Jaws

montereybayaquarium:

Staffer Ann supplies scrumptious sharky snacks to our sevengills for supper and for science!

Our largest sharks at the Aquarium are only temporary visitors here—by diving in and feeding each shark individually, we can keep track of their diet to monitor their health, and also learn more about their life histories before they return to the wild!

It takes a lot of TLC to care for these LTCs: Large Toothy Critters! Fortunately, Aquarist Ann is the best shark mom around 🦈❤️

Dive in with Ann and her buddy Kelsey as they hop into our sharkiest exhibit to feed a few of our residents!
